Техас является крупнейшим сельскохозяйственным штатом: первое место в США по производству говядины, значительные посевы хлопка и сорго, выращивание бахчевых культур, овощей и зерновых. Ведущее место в рыболовстве занимает ловля креветок. Промышленность в основном занимается переработкой нефти и газа, а также сельскохозяйственного сырья. Около 80 процентов населения проживает в городах, в том числе почти половина в агломерациях Даллас - Форт-Уэрт и Хьюстон-Галвестон-Бразориа. Белые составляют 75 процентов населения, чернокожие - около 12. Более 25 процентов техасцев - латиноамериканского происхождения [ Hispanic Americans].
